College Dropout? You can work from home, too.

College Dropout? You can work from home, too.

Ah, working from home.  The oh-so-coveted blend of comfort and productivity.  Working from home is a dream come true for many people (and even more introverts.)  Comfy pants and a cup of coffee in your home office- all with a view to the garden while you work and make money. Does this dream sound familiar?  Maybe that’s just me.

Regardless of how you picture your day to day work-at-home scenario, this is a dream come true for many people. Think these cushy work from home gigs are reserved for those with a college degree and impressive accolades? Think again.

Despite what you might assume, there are plenty of these jobs to go around, even if you don’t have a college degree. And for the proverbial cherry on top, these jobs aren’t limited to just one specific type of career. You can make it happen across a multitude of fields.

Here are examples of three real work from home jobs that don’t require a college education:

#1 Home Tech Support Agent

One of the more popular options for working from home, due to it’s low barrier to entry and decent pay- remote tech support agent. The primary focus of a tech support agent is to provide excellent customer service through an online chat or over the phone. For this position you will need reliable internet and phone connectivity, great customer service skills and a quiet background.  You can start earning money from home without the bother of a commute, coffee pot gossip at the office, or pants. In all seriousness, pants might be a good idea.

For example, Apple offers many different opportunities to work from home as an advisor, team manager, or area manager. You will receive training and will need to be able to answer questions regarding Apple products or services. Of course, a home tech support agent can work for a wide variety of companies filling different niches.

With more and more companies ditching the overhead of large facilities, this niche is only expected to continue to grow in the future. While you will be expected to work hard and be professional regardless of where your physical work station may be, the benefits to an entry remote position like this can be a perfect fit for many people.

#2 Freelance Media Buyer

A freelance media buyer is another valued career that doesn’t require a college education AND can allow you the freedom to work from home. The primary duty of a media buyer is to negotiate and purchase advertising space for clients. The most in-demand media buying skillset at the moment is digital media buying, helping companies manage their online ads.

Although you don’t need a degree for this type of job, experience or know how is important to have.  If this interests you, but you are not well versed, start educating yourself on how to perform these functions. As with any career, the more you know about your field and the better equipped you are, the more room for advancement and higher pay you create.

You can pick up these skills online using sites like udemy.com and YouTube to gather information and find valuable insight and resources to learn from. You can even get a Google AdWords certification from the comfort of your living room.

How do you find media buying clients? Try bidding on jobs as a freelancer. Sites like upwork.com create a space that connect freelancers with businesses that have specific needs. While these are typically smaller, contracted jobs, they can turn in to longer term opportunities. Looking for full-time options from the gate? Sites like Indeed.com provide a valuable opportunity to find the perfect media buying job that meets your needs. Get yourself out there, learn the skill, and get hired.

#3 Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is an often overlooked opportunity to work from home and can also be a highly rewarding job on a personal level. You can apply on sites like Tutor.com to become a tutor in a specific subject that you have mastery over. And you can do it all from the comfort of your home.

Currently, there are over 60 subjects to choose from on Tutor.com, including Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, English, Geometry, Business law, and many other topics. The hours are flexible, and it provides an excellent opportunity to enrich a student’s life through the act of sharing your knowledge of a particular subject.

There are also different sites, think Magic Ears or VIPS Kids, that hire you to teach English to kids in other countries, namely China.  China is a popular destination for students looking to learn English and there are plenty of tutoring jobs available. As either a positive or a negative depending on your schedule and preferences- their peak hours for tutors translate in to very early/very late time zones in the U.S.  So if you keep odd hours or want to fill in alongside a day job until you can make enough money to transition, this could be the perfect set up for you.

There is an abundance of great career opportunities that allow you to work from home doing something that fits the bill for your tastes and skills. Looking at current trends, the list of remote jobs is only expected to grow as time goes on.  Whether you are interested in becoming a home tech support agent, media buyer, online tutor, or none of the above; these jobs are just the tip of the iceberg. And none of them require a college education.

So what are you waiting for? Dip your toe in, the water is warm. If you have ever dreamed of the lifestyle that working from home affords, don’t assume you can’t reach your goal because you lack a college degree.  More and more, employers are looking less at the degree you hold and more at the experience and possibility you present to them. Companies are seeing the benefits of hiring remote workers. If this sounds like a great option for you, don’t holdback.  Put yourself out there and keep applying until you get what you want. It is possible and people are doing it everyday. Why not you?
